College FAQs

Do the students wear uniform?

No, the students are expected to dress appropriately for the activities they are doing that day.

Are school dinners provided?

No, we are a self-catering college! All students take part in shopping for and preparing their own meals whether that be independently or at an engagement level. The cost is currently £3.00/day. Free school meals or use of bursary may be applicable.

My young person has specific dietary needs, how do you manage this?

Whether it be allergies or sensory needs we can easily adapt – just let your class teacher know.

How will my young person get to college?

Transport continues similarly to school. However, there is normally a contribution to be made at Post-16 and you will need to apply for transport.

Can I apply for a 16 to 19 Bursary?

Yes, everyone can apply. You can find the criteria on the government website. We will send out applications in September.

My young person is already at Beaucroft School, how do I get a place at the college?

Please email the co-head teachers to let them know that the college is your first choice. It will go to panel.

My young person is at a different school, how do I get a place at the college?

Firstly, if you haven’t already done so, arrange a tour of the college. Talk to your current school staff, they will guide you. You will need to let your local provision lead know and it will go to panel.

Will my young person still get Speech and Language support?

Yes, if it is on their EHCP this will be provided. The SALT team are onsite at the college 2 days each week.

What qualifications do you offer?

We offer qualifications in English and Maths alongside ASDAN Employability and Personal Progress. We currently only offer qualifications up to Entry Level 3. However, this could change if we have a cohort working at Level 1 in the future. We also offer practical qualifications such as Food Hygiene.

What does a day look like at the college?

Every young person is individual and unique and therefore so is their day! The students arrive at 8.45am and are supported as needed by staff to their classrooms. Lunch is around 12.30pm and the students leave at 3pm. We can give you more detailed information when you come for a tour and we know a little bit about your young person’s abilities.

What ability levels do you support at the college?

We work with students at pre-entry levels on an engagement programme right up to Entry Level 3. Some students have abilities above Entry Level 3; this may be appropriate if we are able to support them to make progress and develop the skills they need to go on and access a Level 1 course.

Can my young person bring their mobile phone to college?

Yes… but… Students over 16 can have and access their phone during the day, subject to following safe use agreement which includes only using it at appropriate times and in post-16 only areas. Students under 16 will need to hand their phones in to staff for safe keeping unless the device is their communication aid or part of a medical plan or behaviour plan.

Who’s who at college?

Sally is the College Lead, Ali is Deputy Lead. Beth works in the office and is always happy to help you if you give us a call!

Where do the college students go after they finish at the college?

We work hard throughout the time they are at the college to expose our students to all types of post-19 education and adult service provisions. We also work with parents/carers letting them know when a young person has enjoyed a visit to a post-19 provision. Our past students have gone on to a wide variety of provisions including local colleges such as Bournemouth and Poole College, specialist provisions such as Foxes Academy and day centres such as Helix and Spiral Blue.

Can we keep in touch when my young person leaves?

Absolutely! We love you to! There are many social events for past and present students such as the Christmas Fayre and Summer BBQ, and the cafe is of course a great hub for ex-students (and parents/carers) to meet up!
